Villa Rica is located in the province of Pasco in the district of Oxapampa at 1480 metres above sea level. Its territory presents a complex topography with exuberant heights that reaches 3000 meters above sea level.

As a town, it was born after the president Ramon Castilla passed an immigration law (1849) promoting the migration of foreign colonists of European origin with the ultimate end of developing agriculture in inhabited lands. In consequence, the initial groups first arrived to the Pozuzo area coming from Triol and Prussia. Then these were followed by Italian colonists who settled in Oxapampa (1891) and latter on in Villa Rica (1925).

Villa Rica is known also as:

• “The Orquid garden”

• “The Ecological refuge”

• “The Coffee paradise”

With the arrival of the colonial throughout Latin America the native groups of the area, the Ashaninkas and Yaneshas, were faced to a new challenge. The Spanish crown willing to conquer and exploit all Peruvian treasures had to overcome the various rebellions that solidly united and marked the different Amazonian ethnic groups from the area. As a result, bravely lead and mobilized by Juan Santos Atahualpa, from 1742 to 1760 Ashaninkas and Yaneshas were joined by the Conibos and Shipibos in an attempt to resist the Spanish forces. The Spaniards on their part, looking for El Dorado, a myth of a hidden treasure, were determined to quench their insatiable thirst for gold. Despite the good efforts made by the resistance and some initial victories in the end the rebellion was severely crushed by the Spaniards. The rebellion leader was soon put to death and in the coming decades several other expeditions were made to the Pachitea and Alto Ucayali river basin looking for an easy way to access the Atlantic Ocean.
